Woodbury falls to Cretin Derham-Hall in the first round of Sections

Woodbury finished the regular season 7-5-2 (5-2-2 SEC) and earned the fourth seed in Section 4AA. On Tuesday, they took on fifth seeded Cretin Derham-Hall (6-8-2, 3-5-1 SEC). In their meeting earlier this season, the Royals topped the Raiders 2-1. Woodbury had been struggling with injuries all season, and Tuesday night was no different. Tayo Famodu and Sebastian Usurriaga did not play at all, several players were limited because of injuries, and over the course of the game  Kohei Adams broke his wrist, and both Matt Jessen-Howard and Jerit Sanden had to leave the game due to knee injuries. Despite this, the Royals started the game stronger than the Raiders, and Brandon Bieszk scored ten minutes in to give Woodbury an early lead. The Raiders didn't back down thiugh, as with about fifteen minutes remaining in the half, Cesar Cruz found the back of the net after controlling a cross in front of the goal. Cretin Derham-Hall had the wind at their backs in the second half, and held the ball for the majority of the time. Despite this, Woodbury was able to create several legitimate scoring chances, many of which were owed to the dribbling of Bradon Bieszk. After eighty minutes had been played, the score remained tied at 1-1. The Royals won the toss and started overtime with the wind behind them. Five minutes into the first OT period, Cretin Derham-Hall earned a free kick just outside the corner of the eighteen-yard-box. Woodbury keeper Jacob Simon punched the shot away, but Cesar Cruz was there to head in the rebound for his second goal of the game. Despite protests from Woodbury players and coaches that Simon had been pushed on the play, the goal stood and Cretin Derham-Hall escaped with a 2-1 win. They will take on top-seeded North St. Paul tonight, and the winner of that game will play the winner of East Ridge vs. Stillwater for a spot in the State Tournament. Woodbury's loss marked the second consecutive year in which they have been favored in their first-round Section game, scored first, and then gone on to lose. The Royals finished the year with a record of 7-6-2 (5-2-2 SEC), and should have a bright future as they are only graduating five seniors from this year's team.
