Injuries Continue with Playoffs Ahead

Woodbury and East Ridge share one of the biggest rivalries in Minnesota high school sports, and on Tuesday afternoon, the stage was set for a great rivalry game. With the sun shining and the stands packed, East Ridge won the battle of Woodbury schools 2-0. For only the second time this season, Woodbury entered the game with no players sidelined due to injury. Their health was short-lived however, as Sebastian Usurriaga and Tayo Famodu were both forced to leave the game in the first fifteen minutes. Neither of them returned. Defenders Chris Chiu and Ben Miller, and forward Matt Jessen-Howard were also injured at some point in the contest. East Ridge took the lead midway through the first half when Samuel Ruiz-Plaza played a chip pass to Connor Stevenson who kicked it into the top corner. The match was back-and-forth, but the Raptors had the more dangerous attack. Danny Muntner added a goal in the second half assisted by Stevenson, and again set in motion by Ruiz-Plaza. East Ridge held on to win 2-0; their first ever victory against Woodbury in the regular season. The loss extended Woodbury's streak of games without a goal to five.

Woodbury then traveled to Mounds View in a battle for 4th place in the conference. Woodbury had to play without seven varsity regulars, including key players Ben Miller and Matt Jessen-Howard who had played in all of the Royal's previous matches. Despite the injuries, Woodbury snapped their goal drought when Yuki Adams scored only four minutes into the second half. Adams was assisted by freshman Alex Santos who made his varsity debut in the game. Only six minutes later, Adams played a cross into Brandon Bieszk who headed it in to stretch the Royals' lead to two. Mounds View made things interesting late, scoring a goal with nine minutes remaining in the game, but Woodbury held on to thanks to the defense of senior captains Steven Jessen-Howard and Sam Hays, and the goalkeeping of Jake Simon. As time ran out, Woodbury's Santos touched the ball past the Mustangs' keeper and then into the net, but his goal was ruled to be after the buzzer, so the game ended 2-1.

Woodbury finished the regular season with a record of 7-5-2 (5-2-2 SEC) and a 4th place finish in the SEC. They are likely to be the 4th seed in Section 4AA, and will probably host Cretin Derham-Hall in the first round of the playoffs on Tuesday. Despite missing many players recently, the Royals expect everyone to be healthy for their playoff game with the possible exceptions of defender Alistair Berg and forward Matt Jessen-Howard.
