Woodbury outscores opponents 13-1 in 3 game stretch

After winning its first three games of the season, Woodbury stumbled with a loss to North St. Paul and a draw against Park. However, after their last three games it's clear that the Royals are back on track.

On Sept. 12, the Royals traveled to White Bear Lake, where they topped the Bears 3-0. Keng Xiong opened the scoring for Woodbury with his fourth goal of the season on an assist from Matt Jessen-Howard. In the second half, Jessen-Howard added a goal of his own in the second half, assisted by Vlad Mann. Within five minutes left, the favor was returned when Vlad Mann scored his first goal of the season on a chip shot from a pass from Jessen-Howard. The backline, led by Ben Miller held on to preserve the win.

The Royals faced a test as they took on a strong but underperforming Cretin-Derham Hall squad on Tuesday, Sept. 17. The game was back and forth the whole way, and halftime ended with no score. Woodbury broke through in the second half when Matt Jessen-Howard was fouled in the box and Brandon Bieszk finished the penalty kick. The game didn't stay tied for long; Cretin-Derham Hall played a ball over the top and scored within eight seconds of being scored on. The game remained tight, and with slightly under 10 minutes to play Matt Jessen-Howard drew yet another penalty for the Royals. This time, his brother Steven stepped up to take it and scored what would be the game-winner. Junior midfielder Tayo Famodu also played a key role in the win.

Woodbury continued its streak by bashing Hastings in an 8-0 road win on Thursday. Despite the success, the win came at a high price for the Royals who suffered enough injuries to leave them down to one healthy defender who had started the season on varsity. The game's goals were scored by Sebastian Usurriaga, Brandon Bieszk, Yuki Adams -- with two goals each -- and Edgar Diaz and Keng Xiong. Matt Jessen-Howard chipped in three assists to cap a three-game stretch in which he recorded seven assists.

The win brought Woodbury to 6-1-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the SEC. They currently share the SEC lead with city rival East Ridge. The sailing will likely be less smooth for the Royals however, as all of their remaining opponents have winning records.
