It took one game and some tough competition this season for the White Bear Lake girls' soccer team to consider some changes.

After a one-goal loss to Centennial last Saturday, White Bear Lake co-head coach John Dierkhising and his team decided to make a switch to a 4-4-2 formation to help provide some space in the middle of the field.

The move appeared to work in a 1-0 home victory over defending Class 2A champion Mahtomedi in a nonconference game Tuesday evening.

First report

A goal by Cami Bachmeier made the difference for White Bear Lake in a 1-0 win versus neighboring Mahtomedi in a nonconference clash Tuesday evening.

Facing the defending Class 2A state champion Zephyrs (2-1-0), the Bears found themselves in a back-and-forth first half that ended in a scoreless tie. In the second half, Bachmeier chased a bouncing ball into the opposing box before kicking it to the far post to put the Bears (1-1-0) ahead 1-0.

Goalkeeper Stella Grabow made nine saves to keep the deficit at 1-0 for Mahtomedi, ranked No. 1 in the Class 2A coaches’ poll released Aug. 29. Chloe Tocko saved three shots for unranked White Bear Lake in the shutout.
