Bend, don’t break.

Duluth East might adopt that proverb — in the early part of the season at least — as it turns the page on a highly successful 2021 season and looks forward toward a new season filled with promise.

With a front line of mostly new starters, the Greyhounds put that idea on display Thursday afternoon at Park Center, where the host Pirates hammered on Duluth East's defense for long stretches and controlled play and the ball the majority of the clock, only to walk off their sun-drenched pitch empty-handed.

First Report

Duluth East held off host Park Center for a 2-0 season-opening victory Thursday afternoon in Brooklyn Park.

Senior midfielder Evan Tomczyk got the 'Hounds started, scoring off a header four minutes in. Duluth East (1-0) added a second goal with 9:54 left when freshman Will Smith knocked home a close-range shot during a scramble in front of the Pirates’ goal.

Park Center (0-1) controlled long stretches of play, but the Duluth East defense kept a lid on the Pirates’ developing scoring chances to secure the shutout.
