The top-seeded Stars had plenty of chances, and converted the one they needed for a 1-0 victory.

Jon Brain broke a scoreless tie in the 49th minute to give No. 1 seed Southwest Christian a 1-0 victory over No. 5 Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa in the boys’ soccer Class 1A semifinals at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Brain lofted a shot off a rebound over Wildcats goalkeeper Jason Ryan from in close. The Wildcats knocked the ball back right on the goal line, but the sideline referee signaled the ball completely crossed the line.

“I saw Luke [Kamm] was winding up to shoot it, so I was just ready for a rebound,” Brain said. “Luke had a great shot. It went down and popped back out. I tapped it in and it got across the line.”

Prior to scoring the goal, the Stars (15-3-3) had plenty of scoring opportunities, but could not convert. The Stars had four shots on goal and missed the net with seven more shots before scoring.

“We weren’t finishing our chances,” Brain said. “We just needed that one to go in to start going. We were missing all the chances we usually score.”

The Wildcats (17-1-2) put pressure on the Stars in the final quarter of the second half, but could not get anything past goalkeeper Adam Tebbs, including a sliding save on a clean shot from in tight with 10:32 remaining.

“I got my mind-set to get every ball and be aggressive,” Tebbs said. “Normally, I like to sit back and let our defense do the work. But [Wednesday], I was going to get the ball. My defensemen helped me out with lots of blocked shots. We just kept the mind-set to keep the shutout and win the game.”

The Stars finished with a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal.
