For 2018 Ms. Soccer finalist Sarah Johnston and her Orono teammates, the end result in the Class 1A title game at U.S. Bank Stadium on Friday wasn’t ideal. But there was some good news: Johnston, a senior attacker, and three of her teammates were honored as Class 1A all-tournament honorees.
Orono’s junior trio of defender Alley Swenson, midfielder Sadie Koltes and goalkeeper Clare Gagne, were also selected. The Spartans lost the game, falling to Mahtomedi in the state title game for the second straight year. This time it was a 1-0 decision, as the Zephyrs’ Sonia Meyer, a senior attacker and all-tournament selection, booted the game-winning goal in overtime.
Meyer is joined by Mahtomedi teammates Audrey Sexson and Lauren Heinsch, both junior attackers, with senior midfielder Grace Padelford.
In Class 2A, the list is headlined by four players from Minnetonka and four from Wayzata. The Skippers defeated their Lake Conference rivals 1-0 in the title game with a first-half goal powered by senior attacker and all-tournament selection Riley Brackin. Seniors Grace Weismann, Emilia Johnson and Paige Kahlmeyer round out the Skippers who were picked.
Wayzata, which has made three of the last four state tournaments, is represented by freshman midfielder Madi Drasher, junior attacker Samantha Dietrick and senior midfielders Eva Bruer and Lily Gilbertson.
Eagan's star goalkeeper, Megan Plaschiko, a senior who won this year's Class 2A Ms. Soccer award, was one of two Wildcats to make the team.
The all-tourney squads, presented by Wells Fargo, were selected by a panel of coaches. View the tables below to see a complete list for each team.
