Stillwater players felt a sense of urgency as they entered the East Ridge stadium for a key Suburban East Conference game Tuesday.

The Ponies, ranked No. 4 in the Class 2A state coaches’ poll, were coming off consecutive scoreless ties and just a night earlier had lost first place in the standings to the seventh-ranked host Raptors.

“We knew we had to come out hard,” said Ponies senior Megan Howard.

First report

Coming off back-to-back scoreless ties, Stillwater was hungry for a goal. And when the drought ended on senior Megan Howard's looping kick from the right sideline just two-and-a-half minutes into the game, the Ponies felt in control.

It was all Stillwater (9-1-3, 4-1-1) needed in a 2-0 victory at East Ridge (9-2-1, 4-1-0) that pushed the Ponies, ranked No. 4 in the Class 2A state coaches' poll, back to the top of the Suburban East Conference standings with just a few regular-season games to play.

Freshman Maya Notch took advantage of a near-free shot from the top of the circle after a corner-kick rebound came her way with 13 seconds left in the first half to complete the scoring.

The No.7-2A Raptors lost for the first time in five conference games.
