First report

A late goal by Julia Barger lifted Eagan to a 1-0 victory between South Suburban girls' soccer powers at Lakeville North on Thursday.

Last year, both Eagan (9-0-3, 5-0-1) and Lakeville North (6-2-3, 4-2-0) played to a 0-0 tie in their only meeting of the year. While it looked like more of the same Thursday, with a scoreless match as time waned, Barger, with three minutes remaining, found the ball with an open net. She did not miss.

Lakeville North's Annie Waters made 10 saves from an Eagan attack that controlled play for a majority of the game. The Wildcats, ranked No. 1 in the Class 2A state coaches' poll, also had six corner kicks.

Both Lakeville North and Eagan were state tournament qualifiers last season. Lakeville North lost 1-0 in the Class 2A state semifinals to Maple Grove in a shootout, while Eagan won the championship 2-1 over Maple Grove.

Eagan has won three of the past four Class 2A state championships while Lakeville North has qualified for seven consecutive state tournaments.

The Wildcats trail Rosemount by one point atop the South Suburban Conference.
