When the No. 2 and No. 3 ranked teams in the state meet, the game can have a certain feel to it. Holy Angels coach James See felt like today’s game took place a month in the future.

“Today had the feel of a section game,” he said. “Where it’s close, you’re just waiting for a set piece to be the difference, or one bad bounce here or there. Today had an October feel to it, and we needed that.”

First Report

Two of the top teams in the small-school class couldn’t gain an advantage on each other Saturday as Holy Angels, ranked No. 2 in the Class 1A coaches’ poll, and No. 3-1A Breck played out a scoreless draw as part of Breck’s homecoming weekend.

This is the first time this season the Stars (10-0-1, 4-0-0) left points on the table, putting a blemish on what had been a perfect season.

These teams did not have much of a feeling out process that you might expect in a marquee matchup. Both squads set a physical tone early, with a few hard tackles and fights for the ball while neither team dominated possession, sharing spells of attacking chances. No one threatened to score in the first half, but the game opened up a bit in the second half. The Mustangs (7-1-1, 5-0-0) had a couple chances off shots from Eric Smitts and Nasym Kushner. The shot from Smitts was stopped by Stars’ keeper Peter Forseth. The kick from Kushner just sailed over the crossbar, rattling the field goal post just beyond it.

The Stars answered with a few minutes of attack time near the end of the half. They were able to play a few crosses in, but they were all corralled by Mustangs’ keeper Hudson Haecker.
