First report

There might be a new No. 1 in the rankings next week.

Minneapolis Washburn, No. 2 in the Class 2A state coaches' poll, broke through late Saturday against No. 1-ranked Stillwater, with Otis Anderson’s goal in the 72nd minute powering the Millers to a 1-0 nonconference victory at Pony Stadium.

With less than nine minutes to play, Anderson, a senior center back, stepped up in transition and found himself open outside the 18-yard box. He fired a low line drive to the far corner, finding the net for his third goal of the season.

The teams played a scoreless first half, although both sides had chances. Stillwater (8-1-1) had two headers off set pieces — one cruised  narrowly over the bar and one  tipped over by Washburn (4-0-2) goalkeeper Ben Schliemann, who finished with three saves on three shots on goal.

Stillwater had numerous chances off set pieces, coming close on long throws from Spencer Scott and a handful of corner and free kicks. The Ponies' leading scorer, Logan Huber, headed two chances wide and one over.

Stillwater’s Rayce Johnson had three saves on four shots on net.
