What kind of impact does Lily Gilbertson make for Wayzata? Well, her coach probably said it best.

Gilbertson helped lead Wayzata, ranked No. 1 in Class 2A by the coaches’ association, to a 4-0 road win Tuesday night at No. 10-2A Minneapolis Washburn. The Trojans had four different scorers, though Gilbertson was not among them. She didn’t register a direct assist, either. But examine any of the offensive chances Wayzata had against the Millers, and Gilbertson was likely involved in some way, whether trying to finish or facilitate. The Trojan senior does a lot of things very well for Wayzata, and that versatility will help drive the team’s success.

First Report

It’s only been two games, but Wayzata has shown why the coaches association has the Trojans ranked No. 1 in Class 2A.

Two early goals got Wayzata going, setting up a 4-0 win against Minneapolis Washburn at Miller Stadium Tuesday night in a nonconference matchup.

Despite being in different conferences, the teams are familiar with each other — the last three Class 2A, Section 6 finals saw the Millers and Trojans take each other on, with Wayzata winning twice. Wayzata won last year’s section final 2-1, en route to a third-place finish in the state tournament.

Wayzata’s Eva Bruer put away a loose ball in the seventh minute during a scrum after a corner kick to put the Trojans (2-0) up 1-0. Emily Dillon scored from 25 yards out in the 18th minute to make it 2-0.

In the second half, Maya Turner put away a rebound and Abigail Brantner scored after converting on a through-ball in the box for Wayzata.

The Millers (0-2) possessed the ball better in the final 10 minutes of the first half, but had one shot on goal over the first 40 minutes. No. 10-2A Washburn found more rhythm in the second half, and Marli Rajacich was especially dangerous for the Millers.

Madison Lo made three saves for Wayzata. Washburn’s Clare Daggett faced 13 shots on net and made nine saves.
