Wayzata approached its regular season finale with Lake Conference rival Minnetonka as a statement game after the Skippers dealt the Trojans their first loss of the season.

“We just wanted to show them what we have and what to expect at state,” junior forward Marissa Kalkar said.

Kalkar scored four goals (three in the second half) while fellow forward Morgan Turner notched three assists, two coming on Kalkar goals.

“(Turner’s) my partner in crime. We’ve had some beautiful plays on the field, we work well together and I don’t know what I’d do without her,” Kalkar said.

The top team in the Class 2A coaches’ poll, Wayzata (11-2-2, 5-2-1) posted nine shutouts in its first 11 matches before falling 3-1 to the No. 14-2A Skippers (9-5-2, 4-4-0) on Sept. 20.

Trojans coach Tony Peszneker felt his team was caught out by Minnetonka’s intensity and Wayzata's poor finishing on chances they would normally convert.

“(Minnetonka) beat us quite handily at their place so it’s very refreshing and good to see the girls to come through with a statement game,” Peszneker said.

The statement was more all-encompassing than the resounding scoreline; it was seen in every aspect of the game.

The Trojans moved the ball easily across the field and created chance-after-chance, dominating the shots category 22-2.

"We might not be conference champions but to take a look at this game gives us good encouragement and confidence next week,” Peszneker said prior to learning his team secured its third straight league title after Hopkins fell to Eden Prairie shortly after the game.

Wayzata now enters Class 2A, Section 6 playoffs next week and will likely be the top-seed.

After posting one of the highest winnning margins in a Lake Conference game in recent years, the Trojans will look to ride the momentum and repeat as section champions.

“Our passing today was the best its been all year,” Pesznecker said. “We’ve been preaching we have to move the ball quicker and execute better. We have the potential to do that every game -- maybe not so many goals -- but we have a lot of good athletes.”
