A former Eagan High School basketball and soccer coach is accused of pocketing money he collected from sports camps instead of giving it to the school district.

The Dakota County Attorney's Office charged Kurt Virgin, 60, with six counts of theft by swindle Thursday, saying he stole $29,184 from the Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan School District between April 2009 and December 2011.

According to the county attorney, Virgin was operating the sports camps through the school district, but kept some of the registration fees and money raised through student fundraisers for his own bank account. He admitted to school officials in November that he had deposited the money in his personal accounts, the charges say.

Virgin, who had worked for the district since 1980, was placed on leave from the school district in November amid an internal investigation. His resignation was announced at a January school board meeting.
