Hill-Murray coach Jeff Zupfer and his team have a new goal every two weeks. The first of his team’s goals was defense.

“We wanted our kids to be lunch-pail soccer players,” Zupfer said. “We want our kids to outwork the other kids and get behind the ball. So far, they’ve bought in.”

To say they’ve accomplished that goal is an understatement. Through 13 games, the Pioneers have allowed one total goal. Hill-Murray continued that success on Wednesday with a 2-0 win against section rival Mahtomedi.

First Report

Two early goals proved to be all Hill-Murray needed on Wednesday as the Pioneers’ pressure on both ends of the field proved to be too much as Hill-Murray took down Class 2A, Section 4 rival Mahtomedi 2-0 on its home turf.

The Pioneers, ranked No. 2 in the latest Class 2A coaches’ poll, maintained their unbeaten record with two quick goals. Junior midfielder Jacob Dinezo tallied his team-best 18th goal of the season. That put Hill-Murray ahead 1-0 in the fifth minute of play.

In the 18th minute, the Pioneers (13-0, 5-0) doubled their lead when senior forward Jeronimo Laklia got behind the defense and buried a shot to make it 2-0.

From there, Hill-Murray’s defense shut down any chance of a comeback from the Zephyrs (6-5-2, 2-1-2). The shutout is the Pioneers’ 12th this season as the team has allowed just one goal all season. Hill-Murray keeper Tayler Pinx made four saves in the victory while Mahtomedi’s Sebastian De La Torre made 12 saves in a losing effort.
