Minnehaha Academy pulled away from Breck in the second half for a 4-2 victory in the girls’ Class 1A soccer championship game Saturday at U.S. Bank Stadium.

The Redhawks’ firepower, averaging 4.7 goals per game this season, was too much for a Mustangs defense that allowed 0.72 per game. The contrasting styles played out with the Redhawks having a 6-1 shot advantage when the teams were tied and 14-9 for the game.

“We worked on breaking lines in practice. It’s then a matter of how do you get behind that defensive line,” Redhawks coach Bryan Hollaway said. “We knew we needed to attack with numbers, if we didn’t they would be able to shift to us. We focused on, let’s get numbers forward and let’s play in behind when we get into the final third.”

Berit Parten led the way for the Redhawks with two goals and an assist. After getting the assist on Greta Carlson’s goal to open the scoring, she fired a shot into the top far corner off a free kick with 3:42 left in the first half. She gave the Redhawks a two-goal lead 2:36 into the second half by dribbling through the Mustangs defense and beating the goalkeeper with a shot just inside the far post.

“To be honest, I wasn’t really thinking about it,” Parten said of her first goal. “I was just shooting, because I was hearing [the Breck student section], so I was just like, ‘shoot it, shoot it.’ I think if would have tried to place it any better, it would have went wide.”

Carlson scored on a rebound into an open net 12:19 into the first half. Maggie Mixon got the Mustangs (10-5-4) on the board less than four minutes later to tie the score 1-1.

Carlson scored again with 15:52 remaining in the second half on a penalty kick.
