Southwest Christian broke through in the second half to defeat St. Paul Humboldt 3-0 in the Class 1A boys’ soccer state tournament championship game Saturday.

After seeing shot after shot miss the net, the Stars (16-3-3) got on the board with 23:07 left in the second half when Jon Brain found the back of the net after a failed clearing attempt by a Hawks defenseman. Brain later scored his second goal of the game with 11:11 left.

“We were getting those opportunities to shoot,” Brain said. “They weren’t going in, but we all had the same mind-set to keep going at them and keep shooting and one’s going to go in.”

Sam Widdifield extended the Stars’ lead to 2-0 over eight minutes later by beating the Hawks goaltender on the far side with a shot in the box.

“It was super crucial,” Brain said. “We needed that. It completely demoralized the other team. We saw that and continued and scored another.”

The Hawks (13-8-1) had their best opportunity to score with 7:50 left, but Hser P Htoo’s penalty kick was stopped by sprawling Stars goalkeeper Adam Tebbs. Tebbs was later forced to make a diving save on a long-range shot with under four minutes to play.

Yah Naing Oo, the leading goal scorer for the Hawks, left game with an ankle injury early in the first half and did not return.

“He’s a catalyst for us,” Hawks coach John Pucci said. “(He’s) the focal point for our attack. When he went down, that changed the game.”
