Izzy Engle is usually willing to share. In the opening minute, the spotlight was all hers.

The sophomore midfielder, who leads No. 1-ranked Edina in assists, scored a pair of goals in the first minute, leading the Hornets to a 3-0 victory over Mounds View in the quarterfinals of the Class 3A girls’ soccer tournament in Farmington.

First Report

Edina was up big in a flash.

Izzy Engle scored on a corner kick and again struck from 15 yards out to give top-seeded Edina a two-goal lead after a minute of play. It was all Edina (19-0-0) needed in a 3-0 win over unseeded Mounds View (15-3-2) in Wednesday’s Class 3A state quarterfinal in Farmington.

Edina (19-0-0) was kept off the scoreboard again until halftime but applied constant pressure against Mounds View goalkeeper Lauren McAlpine who made seven saves in each half.

Maddie Dahlien scored in the 50th minute for her 34th goal of the season. Engel is next on the team with 20.

Edina goalkeeper Bayliss Flynn made one save on a free kick attempt by Ella Herbert in the 72nd minute.

“Honestly, when we were up 2-0 and it was a minute into the game I was like ‘What have we even done?’ and we’re already up 2-0,” Engle said. “It was a blur, but it was an amazing blur because that put us up and gave us momentum to keep pushing forward. I think it did put their heads down a bit, too.”

Engle’s first goal was unexpected. Corner kicks have produced some of her team-high 20 assists, but hers from the left side bent back toward the goal, off the keeper’s hand and into the net 34 seconds in.

“I think we were very fortunate that the bounces went our way,” Edina coach Katie Aafedt said after watching her squad raise its season record to 19-0-0. “It doesn’t always go that way, so we’ll take it when we can get it.”

The second goal was more of the conventional variety as Engle struck from 15 yards out from the right side, beating the keeper lower left at one minute.

Minnesota Ms. Soccer, senior Maddie Dahlien, scored her 34th goal of the season in the 50th minute.

This was Edina’s sixth consecutive shutout. Junior goalkeeper Bayliss Flynn was only called upon to make one save, but it was a leaping rebuff on a Mounds View (15-3-2) free kick in the 72nd minute.

A lack of stats didn’t diminish her performance in her coach’s eyes.

“She gives us the confidence back there that allows us to push more offensively,” Aafedt said, “because we know if something gets by our back line she’s there to clean it up.”
