Since 2011, Wayzata has won six section tournament titles, and in most cases, gone through Hopkins to do so.

On Tuesday night, that scenario played out once again as the Trojans used relentless ball control and defense to secure a 2-0 win over the Royals and capturing the Class 3A, Section 6 championship at Hopkins High School.

“We stayed with it the whole game,” Wayzata head coach Tony Peszneker said. “They persevered They worked hard. They did all the things we asked of them.”

First Report

A relentless Wayzata squad clinched the Section 6AAA championship Tuesday night with a 2-0 win over Hopkins at Hopkins High School.

Wayzata controlled the pace of play in the opening minutes, firing shots at the goal left and right, including a shot from Dana Bruer that went off the top cross bar.

Both Ana Munyon and Megan Smith also had great looks at goal for the Trojans.

Wayzata tallied 10 shots on goal in the first half, with Hopkins goalie Luci Rock coming up huge to keep the first half scoreless.

Rock had to leave the game toward the start of the second half after colliding with Bruer.

Fifteen minutes later, the Trojans, on their 13th shot on goal, finally found the back of the net. Senior Grace Lopata sent a high-flying kick from the 20-yard line that went right over goalie Olivia Rivera’s hands, finding the top left corner of the net.

In the 61st minute, the Trojans extended their lead when Bruer found an open corner and angled a slow-roller that found the back of the net. A critical 2-0 for Wayzata late in the contest.

Wayzata outshot Hopkins 15 to four.

Wayzata will head to the state tournament, where quarterfinal play begins Tuesday, Oct. 26.
