St. Michael-Albertville senior Tyler Barrett’s goal for this year’s Class 2A boys’ state swimming and diving meet was to finish in the top five in the 1-meter diving.

“There were so many good divers at state this year,” St. Michael-Albertville diving coach Becca Haggerty said. “We wanted to be realistic with our expectations.”

Going into the finals on Thursday at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center, Barrett was in second place, 3.4 points behind Stuart Fish of Hopkins.

“I looked at him and told him that he needed to hit every dive just to secure his spot for third place,” Haggerty said. “But it all came down to him doing exactly what he needed to do and he pulled through for a very close first place finish.”

Barrett, who finished third at the state meet as a sophomore and ninth last year, won the diving title with a score of 399.1. Fish finished second with a 398.6.

Three other divers finished within 12 points of Barrett’s winning score in the competitive event — Sam Hlavachek of Elk River (396.7), Alex Sulistyo of Eastview (391.6) and Ben Linde of Andover (387.45).

“We knew he had potential,” Haggerty said, “but didn’t think he’d actually take first place, so it was really fun to see him compete so well and get the top spot.”

Chisago Lakes diver repeats in 1A
Chisago Lakes swept the top three spots in the Class 1A finals. Junior Storm Opdahl won his second consecutive title with a score of 462.05.

Opdahl won last year with a score of 470.15. Wildcats sophomore Jimmy Nord was second (423.9) and sophomore Toby Styles third (376.25).

Owing to COVID-19 restrictions, spectators and media  were not allowed onsite at the swimming and diving state meet.
