If the Centennial girls’ soccer team ended its season with a win, that would normally mean celebrating a Class 2A state championship at U.S. Bank Stadium.

But in 2020, ending the season with a win means capturing a section title.

That’s what happened for the top-seeded Cougars on Thursday, as they defeated No. 2 seed Blaine 2-0 in the Class 2A, Section 7 final at Centennial High School to repeat as section champions.

It was the final prep game, not only for the Centennial seniors, which includes standout forward Khyah Harper, but also the final match for coach Ginger Flohaug, who is transitioning to a new role at Centennial.

It was going to be the last game for Flohaug, regardless of how the Cougars (13-1-0) did this fall. Prior to the season, she announced she would be stepping down from coaching. Her son and daughter, twins who are in seventh grade, plan to try out for the Centennial High School program next year, and Flohaug wants to be able to attend their games — something that would be hard to do if she was still running the varsity squad.

“I don’t miss my kids’ games,” Flohaug said. “If I’m coaching the varsity squad, I’m going to miss their games. I put everything into my varsity team.”

In addition to getting the chance to see her children play with this change, Flohaug is also moving into the assistant athletic director role at Centennial.

First Report

After nearly 50 minutes of soccer filled with speed and scoring attempts, Centennial senior forward Khyah Harper scored her team-best 26th goal of the season. Her tally proved to be the difference, as the top-seeded Cougars bested No. 2 seed Blaine 2-0 in the Class 2A, Section 7 final on Thursday at Centennial High School.

Harper’s goal for the Cougars (13-1-0) came via a penalty kick after she was tripped up in the box by two Blaine defenders. The University of Minnesota commit converted on her chance by beating Blaine junior goalkeeper Tess Enlow.

Centennial earned some insurance late in the second half when junior forward Sarah Strating got behind the opposing defense to score making it 2-0 in the 76th minute.

The Bengals (8-4-2) had a fair share of opportunities in this match but could not convert. One of those chances resulted in a goal that was called off because Blaine was offside.

Centennial senior goalkeeper Jenna Lang finished with eight saves. Her counterpart, Enlow, finished with four saves.

Soccer state tournaments will not be held this fall due to the COVID-19 pandemic, marking the end of the season for Centennial.
