The Skippers' Avryn List buried a shot to score the first goal of the game but the lead was short-lived as Lauren Becker scored the equalizer for the Eagles just moments later.

Few miles and even fewer goals separate rivals Minnetonka and Eden Prairie when they meet on the soccer pitch.

For the 10th straight time, the Lake Conference foes finished a contest with either a tie or one-goal result, including Thursday’s matchup in Eden Prairie which resulted in a 1-1 tie.

It was an upset of sorts for Eden Prairie (2-6-2, 1-6-2) as the Eagles all but ended the Skippers’ (6-2-1, 6-2-1) chances of sharing a Lake title with Edina, which has an 8-0-1 league record, or earning the top seed in the Class 2A, Section 2 playoffs.

“Obviously there’s always a lot of tension between Eden Prairie and Tonka,” said Eden Prairie senior co-captain Lauren Becker. “There’s a little bit of bad blood. We kind of go head-to-head with them every year and they’re always really good games. It’s just exciting to be out there. I play club with half the girls on the Tonka team. Familiar faces, so it’s always fun.”

The first half on a chilly, calm night at Aerie Stadium was scoreless despite Minnetonka notching four corner kick tries and having its share of scoring chances. Eden Prairie is last in the Lake standings but at no fault of its defense, which allowed 1.6 goals per game entering Tuesday’s tilt.

First Report

Minnetonka’s hopes of winning this year’s Lake Conference title took a hit Thursday night as the Skippers tied Eden Prairie 1-1 in Eden Prairie.

Minnetonka, ranked No. 8 in the Class 2A coaches poll, got on the scoreboard first when Avryn List buried a shot in the top of the net with 29 minutes, 49 seconds left in the second half.

Eden Prairie (2-6-2, 1-6-2) responded quickly, however, when Lauren Becker scored on senior night on an assist from Megan Timmerman with 25 minutes, 4 seconds to play.

Maddie Schultz made six saves for Minnetonka (6-2-1, 6-2-1) and Mackenzie Brooks made seven stops for Eden Prairie.

With Thursday’s tie, Minnetonka trails Edina, which has an 8-0-1 league record, in the Lake standings. The Skippers and Edina shared the 2019 Lake title and will meet again next Tuesday.

Thursday was the 10th straight game in the series between these teams which was decided by a tie or one goal. The two may see each other again in the Class 2A, Section 2 playoffs later this month.
