Top performer winner

Maddie Fritel, Spectrum. Fritel has made an immediate impact in the Sting lineup during her freshman campaign. After scoring four goals in her first two games this season, she erupted for seven goals in Spectrum's 9-2 victory over North Lakes Academy on Sept. 10. According to the Minnesota State High School League, only two players have scored more than seven goals in state history prior to this season — Eagan’s Susie Lee scored eight times in 2004 and Cambridge-Isanti’s Molly Rouse matched that total in 2006.

Top performer candidates

Ashley Anzures, Cristo Rey Jesuit. The junior forward led the Pumas’ offense to start the season, recording 16 points (9 goals, 7 assists) through three wins. In the season opener, Anzures tallied two goals and four assists in a 10-0 win against Nova Classical. On Sept. 9, she flipped those stats and recorded four goals and two assists in the Pumas' 8-0 defeat of Concordia Academy. Two days later, the Pumas recorded a 4-0 shutout of Concordia Academy, with Anzures recording three goals and an assist.

Clara Holmberg, Buffalo. The senior goalkeeper has been tested frequently this season, facing 69 shots through three games — an average of one shot every 3.5 minutes. Though the Bison started the season with a record of 0-2-1, Holmberg’s 62 saves ranks fourth most of any goalkeeper in the state this season. She has a .899 save percentage through three games.

Harper Randolph, Orono. Randolph, a junior goalkeeper, gave up her first goal of the season during her third game in goal in the Spartans' 1-1 tie with Waconia on Sept. 10. Randolph faced just six shots in each of her first two shutouts (3-0 defeat of Holy Family Catholic on Aug. 28; 5-0 triumph over Mound Westonka on Sept. 2) but made 30 saves against Waconia, allowing the lone goal with less than six minutes remaining in the game.

Olivia Watson, Moorhead. The senior forward needed less than 80 minutes of the 2020 season to break a state record. According to the MSHSL, Watson’s 11 goals in the Spuds' 17-0 win against Rocori on Aug. 27 is the most in state history, breaking the previous record of eight goals in a single match. Watson added two assists in the win. The Spuds won their first five games by a combined total of 53-0, with Watson scoring 28 of those goals and assisting on nine others.
