Winners of every half they played this season until Monday, Holy Angels left their locker room after halftime in the Class 1A semifinal against St. Cloud Tech at U.S. Bank Stadium with one message:

“If you win the half, you’re probably going to win the game,” Holy Angels coach James See said.

Trailing by a goal after they conceded only their ninth goal all season, the Stars scored all of their goals in the second half for a 4-1 comeback victory. Sophomore striker and two-sport star Carter Hermanson’s two goals in 80 seconds in the 49th and 50th minutes changed everything.

Until then, See had seen what he called “a bit of fear for the first time” in his players’ eyes.

First report

Holy Angels sophomore forward Carter Hermanson scored not once, but twice early in the second half Monday against St. Cloud Tech and that was all his team needed in a 4-1 Class 1A soccer semifinal victory at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Hermanson scored twice in three minutes after St. Cloud Tech had scored the first half’s only goal.

He tied the game in the 49th minute after teammate David Oslund’s long throw-in from the right side bounced in front of the goal and Hermanson directed it past St. Cloud Tech goalkeeper Christian Engel.

In the 51st minute, Engel stopped Holy Angels midfielder Shalim Montes Hernandez’ shot from the left wing off a long crossing pass from the right side. But Hermanson was three yards out and scored into the open goal on the rebound.

Hernandez scored the third goal in the 77th minute with a long shot lobbed over Engel after he had misplayed a ball. Holy Angels’ Porter Ball scored a minute later on a sharp-angled shot.

Holy Angels advances to play in the championship game on Thursday agains the winner of Monday’s Orono-Blake semifinal.

Leading by one goal, Holy Angels lost starting goalkeeper Peter Forseth in the 58th minute when he received a red card for jawing at the referee after he was flagged for not wearing a shinguard. He was ejected after complaining to the referee and replaced by senior Will Lehnherr for the final 22 minutes.

Because he had already been substituted out of the game for the shinguard infraction, Holy Angels did not play short-handed the rest of the way.

St. Cloud Tech junior midfielder Ethan Miller scored the first half’s only goal after he had worked the left side tirelessly until he and his team were rewarded in the 34th minute.

Just moments earlier, teammate Mohamed Yussuf sent a long pass ahead for Miller on a full run, but it was 10 yards too far and easily gathered by Forseth.

Soon thereafter, Yussuf held possession of another ball played to him, spun and with his left-foot sent another pass 40 yards ahead down the left side. Miller outran a Holy Angels defender to it and beat Forseth to it as well, chipping the ball with his right foot over Forseth head after he had ventured well out of goal pursuing the ball.

Check back later for more on the game.
