Holy Angels hangs on to defeat Cloquet-Carlton in 1A quarterfinal

The Stars scored all four of their goals in the first half and withstood a late second-half surge by the Lumberjacks.

Holy Angels built a three-goal first-half lead and survived to defeat Cloquet-Carlton 4-3 in a Class 1A quarterfinal Thursday at Chisago Lakes High School.

The Stars’ Sydney Burns, Claire Lang, Hailey VonSee and Mia Van der Heide scored to give the team a 4-1 halftime lead. Holy Angels was then on defense much of the second half, as Cloquet-Carlton scored twice and generated multiple scoring chances.

“They played us off the park in the second half,” Stars coach Dave Marshak said. “We’re a team that prides ourselves on defending, and we just fell apart.”

Burns scored in the game’s second minute on a crossing pass from Ciara McCrory. Lang scored in the 23rd minute, VonSee in the 25th, to give the Stars a 3-0 lead.

Van der Heide made a 44-yard free kick in the 31st minute after Cloquet/Carlton freshman Alexa Snesrud had cut the Holy Angels lead to 3-1.

The Stars' Sydney Burns scored on a crossing pass from Ciara McCrory in the second minute. Claire Lang, Hailey VonSee and Mia Van der Heide also scored for the third-seeded Stars (17-2-1), who yielded two second-half goals.

Cloquet-Carlton freshman Alexa Snesrud scored twice, including one on a chip shot over Holy Angels' goalie in the 73rd minute to make the score 4-3. The Lumberjacks' Hannah Biebl was also credited with a goal.
