Time was running out.

Champlin Park was hunting for its first state tournament berth at home, but the Rebels had grown frustrated by Roseville’s strong defense in the Class 2A, Section 5 final Tuesday. It appeared overtime was on the horizon, and the result might be determined by penalty kicks.

Then junior Megan Carlson saved the day — and perhaps the season.

Carlson's goal with just 1:42 left in regulation lifted Champlin Park, the top-ranked team in the final Class 2A coaches' poll this season, to a 1-0 victory over Roseville to clinch that coveted state berth.

"When I scored the goal, I didn't even know what to do," Carlson admitted. "I thought, 'I needed to celebrate more!'"

After holding off Roseville as the clock wound to zero, Carlson and the rest of the Rebels celebrated.

"I looked for Maille [Mathis], and we ran towards each other," Carlson said. "Then I saw the rest of my teammates running towards me, and I realized it was really happening."

First Report

Megan Carlson scored with just 1:42 left in regulation to lift Champlin Park to a 1-0 victory over Roseville in the Class 2A, Section 5 championship game played at Champlin Park Tuesday.

Carlson's goal, assisted by Maille Mathis, got past Raiders goalkeeper Bella DiGiorno to give the top-seeded Rebels (17-0-1) their first state tournament berth in school history.

Champlin Park, ranked No. 1 in the final Class 2A coaches’ poll this season, has been perfect since tying Maple Grove 1-1 on Sept. 5 — or 14 matches ago.

Roseville (12-6-1), the No. 2 seed, saw its bid for its first state title appearance since 1999 ruined with the late goal.
