Lightning struck at Lakeville North Thursday night. And the lightning came off the foot of Eastview boys' soccer standout Jacob Salmon.
Early in Thursday's contest, Eastview set up for a corner kick against the Panthers, a team that had allowed just two goals in their first 12 games. Sanat Iyer lined up to strike the ball, and Salmon leapt into action.
"I made a run towards the goal, but as I saw the ball coming I realized it wouldn't come anywhere near the goal," Salmon said. "So I took my run towards the back post, and I took a half-volley into the top corner — where the goalie didn't have a chance to stop it."
Eastview scored a goal less than three minutes into its contest Thursday at Lakeville North, then held on to hand the Panthers their first loss of the season, 1-0.
The Lightning goal came on a corner kick as Sanat Iyer found Jacob Salmon open on the far post, and Salmon scored his 20th goal of the season at the 37:07 mark.
With the win, Eastview, ranked No. 5 in the Class 2A state coaches' poll, took command of the South Suburban Conference standings by improving to 7-0-0 for 21 points. The Lightning are now 12-1-0 this season.
No. 3-2A Lakeville North fell to 11-1-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the South Suburban Conference.
Eastview goalkeeper Elliot Brown finished with 10 saves in claiming his ninth clean sheet this season, while Evan Siefken stopped eight shots for the Panthers.
