The annual Lakeville North vs. Lakeville South regular season volleyball matches have become must-see action in recent seasons.

As a matter of record, Lakeville South had come out on top in four of the last five regular season meetings between the two teams, but that didn’t faze Lakeville North coach Jackie Richter one bit. Neither did the Panthers’ win over the Cougars in last weekend’s Southwest Minnesota Challenge Tournament.

First Report

In a battle of two of the state’s best, Lakeville North outlasted its cross-town rival, Lakeville South, in a four-set marathon — 25-21, 27-25, 25-18 and 29-27 — that had all the appearances of two teams hungry to meet in the postseason.

The Panthers, ranked No. 4 in the Class 3A state coaches’ poll, won the first set 25-21 to take the early lead, but the No. 5-3A Cougars responded with a 27-25 win in the second set. Lakeville North took a 2-1 lead with a 25-18 third set, and stormed back in the fourth set to outlast the Cougars, 29-27.

Junior outside hitter Maddy Hornyak led the Panthers (10-1, 2-0) with 22 kills. She was assisted by fellow junior Abbey Milner, who had 10 kills and two serving aces.

Lakeville South (6-4, 1-1) junior outside hitter Ava Moes was tops on her team in kills with 22. Senior middle hitter Emily Torborg had seven kills, while junior middle hitter Kendyl Storlie and senior outside hitter Grace Carlson had six kills apiece.
