Wayzata vs. Edina

7 p.m., Monday, Sept. 19

Two of the top teams in the Lake Conference and Class 3A square off in what should be a pivotal game in determining a conference champion. Either Wayzata (5-0-1) or Edina (4-2) has finished as the conference’s top team since 2011. The Trojans have the current edge, snagging a 2-1 victory over Edina on Sept. 1.

Wayzata – the No. 3 team in Class 3A – are trying to dethrone Edina and win their first Lake Conference title since 2018. The Trojans got off to a strong start in accomplishing that goal in 2022, winning the first four games of the season by allowing one goal or less. Additionally, Wayzata is having little trouble finding the back of the net, scoring at least two goals in every game and totaling 21 goals through six games.

Edina, however, is looking to up its conference title streak to four years in a row and a win over Wayzata could go a long way. As the No. 5 team in Class 3A, the Hornets will need senior goalkeeper and Montana commit Bayliss Flynn (27 saves) and the rest of the defensive unit to step up in order to secure the victory. Junior Izzy Engle (nine goals, four assists) has led Edina on the offensive end of the field.
