Speaking of teams likely to appear in a state tournament final, these programs have all but established permanent residency in the big game.
Benilde-St. Margaret’s, which has failed to reach the state tournament just four times since 2005, won four Class 1A championships from 2012 to 2016. Mahtomedi is the three-time defending Class 1A championship (from 2017 to 2019).
The teams are both in Class 2A in the new three-class system. Benilde-St. Margaret’s, led by senior Ava Wagener’s nine goals, is 5-0 and ranked No. 1 in the coaches' poll while Mahtomedi is 4-1 and ranked No. 3.
