It’s never a bad idea to check in with Mahtomedi, given that the Zephyrs are the three-time defending Class 1A state champions.
Unfortunately, there’s not much to report yet in this pandemic-shortened season — the Zephyrs (3-0-0, 3-0-0) have won their three games by a combined score of 9-1 and two others have been postponed.
Thursday’s game actually marks the end of No. 1-1A Mahtomedi’s regular season, barring makeup dates on those postponements. Thursday is also the regular-season finale for No. 10-1A Hill-Murray (3-1-1, 3-1-1), which lost 3-2 to the Zephyrs in last season’s Class 1A, Section 4A championship.
Mahtomedi boasts a second-team all-state honoree in senior Erika Broten, while Hill-Murray features a standout defender in sophomore Lucy Zupfer.
