Moorhead senior Olivia Watson whipped the Minnesota state soccer scene into a frenzy when she scored what is believed to be a state record 11 goals in a 17-0 triumph over Rocori on Aug. 27. The Minnesota State High School League lists the previous record of most goals scored in a game at eight, a feat accomplished by Susie Lee of Eagan in 2004 and Molly Rouse of Cambridge-Isanti in 2006.
Watson, a North Dakota State University commit, notched another three goals in 12-0 win over Sauk Rapids-Rice on Aug. 31 and seven more on Sept. 3 in a 12-0 defeat of St. Cloud Apollo. Her 21 goals lead the state, surpassing the 20 goals she had in 18 games last season. Junior Maria Zanotti has 12 goals for the Spuds (3-0, 3-0), who have yet to surrender a goal this season.
Willmar (2-0, 2-0) opened the season with victories over St. Cloud Apollo (2-1 on Aug. 27) and St. Cloud Tech (3-1 on Sept. 1), and figures to be one of the Central Lakes Conference teams that can slow the Spuds’ offensive onslaught. Junior Ellary Lange scored twice in the victory over St. Cloud Tech.
