Wayzata vs. Edina

11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 29

There's little room for error in the Lake Conference. With each of the league's teams playing eight conference games, one bad result could crash a squad's shot at a circuit title.

It’s a scenario faced by Wayzata, which meets Edina on Saturday for the second time this year. The teams enter the week tied for second place in the conference standings with six points apiece.

With a victory, the No. 3-2A Trojans, who have finished atop the Lake standings every year since 2013, can avoid the sting of sweep by the Hornets and keep pace with Eden Prairie in the Lake title chase.

Wayzata trails Eden Prairie by four points in the standings with four conference games remaining, so a victory over No. 1-2A Edina is a must.

The Trojans (8-2, 2-2) need a solid performance from Lily Gilbertson, who scored her team’s lone goal in a 3-1 loss to the Hornets on Sept. 4 and whose team-leading eight assists helps create opportunities for her teammates. Junior midfielder Maya Turner has provided consistency, with five goals and three assists.

Edina (6-1-1, 2-1-0) defeated Wayzata thanks, in part, to Jessie Hunt's two goals. Freshman forward Maddie Dahlien has also made her presence known, tallying six goals and seven assists in eight matches.
