Edina vs. Wayzata

7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 4

The commonalities run deep between these Lake Conference foes: both finished atop last season’s conference standings with 18 points; they drew each other twice last year; and their seasons ended the same exact way — with 2-1 losses to title-winning Eagan in the state tournament.

Both programs also boast top preseason rankings. Wayzata enters the 2018 season as the top-ranked team in Class 2A, while Edina isn’t far behind at No. 4. Given the pedigree of both teams and conference standings implications, this tilt is one to watch.

The Trojans' top ranking is indicative of their talent, which they hope carries into results. After losing 2017's goals and assists leader to graduation, Wayzata (1-0) returns Lily Gilbertson and Samantha Dietrick, who combined for 21 goals and 17 assists last season.

The Hornets finished last year tied with the Trojans atop of the conference in part because of their stingy defense. In eight conference games, they allowed just two goals. But Edina also had offensive production.

Midfielder Sophia Boman, who scored six goals and led the team with six assists, returns for her junior year and she’s looking to lead the Hornets (2-0) back to the state tournament.
