Two first-half goals scored within a minute of each other was enough to push the Millers on to the semifinals next week at U.S. Bank Stadium.

With less than seven minutes left in the half, Washburn’s Lydia Ruppert scored on a high-lifting shot from 25 yards out. The shot got just past the outstretched arms of St. Michael-Albertville goalie Carolyn Bania.

A minute later, Kaitlyn Villars beat the Knights’ defense down the field to score to give the Millers (17-1-1) a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

St. Michael-Albertville (15-2-1) was held scoreless by Washburn senior Taylor Cottew for most of the game. The Saints’ Makenzie Langdok scored on a penalty kick with 59 seconds left in the game.

After the game, Minneapolis Washburn coach Reuben Ndely spoke highly of his team’s seniors.

“That is one thing I will always trust on this team is our senior leadership,” Ndely said. “It has been our signature this year to strike and then strike again. Our girls are very strict when it comes to us scoring a goal to not get [too] happy with the goal. We are ready to go forward instead.”
