Lakeville North has been one of the most dominant teams in the state all season. That didn’t change Thursday.

The Panthers controlled play from start to finish and took care of Blaine with a 2-0 victory in the Class 2A girls’ soccer quarterfinals at Chisago Lakes High School. Lakeville North has not given up in a goal in 13 consecutive games.

“It’s always hardest when a team’s up for elimination,” Lakeville North coach Jeremiah Johnson said. “So you’ve got to grind it out all the way to the end.”

The Panthers (17-1-0) scored first when Olivia Bruce took a crossing pass in front of the net and buried it for a 1-0 lead with 14:55 to play in the first half.

Lakeville North had several scoring chances before the first goal but were stopped by Blaine goalie Emily Brown, who singlehandedly kept her team in the game.

“That’s the best I’ve seen a female high school goalkeeper play — ever,” Johnson said.

Blaine (8-7-5) appeared to tie the game with 23:20 left when Hailey Borja tapped a rebound past Panthers keeper Taylor Lock. But the goal was waved off after the referee determined Lock had possession of the ball before it came loose.

The Panthers got some breathing room with 14:50 to play when Alexis Tousignant knocked in a rebound after Blaine couldn’t clear the ball. That made it a 2-0 score and halted any momentum the Bengals had started to gather in the second half.

Lakeville North allowed just three goals all season. The Panthers posted victories of 5-0, 5-0 and 4-0 in section play en route to the No. 1 seed in the state tournament.

“Our defense has a lot of chemistry and they work really hard,” Bruce said. “We’re really proud of our defense and Taylor.”
