The focus going into the game for Orono girls’ soccer was simple: Play well in the first 10 minutes.

They took a 1-0 lead early and didn’t look back. Mission accomplished.

“When we score right away, it gets us more pumped,” senior forward Lily McKown said.

Second-seeded Orono (18-2-0) coasted to a 6-0 victory over Dover-Eyota (15-4-0) on a rainy Tuesday evening in the Class 1A girls’ soccer state quarterfinals at Farmington High School. It was a rematch of last year’s state quarterfinals, which Orono won 3-1.

Senior midfielder Claire Bash scored the first goal on a header off of a corner kick. She provided the bookends for Orono’s effort, scoring on another header in the final minutes of the game.

McKown scored a hat trick, including two goals before halftime. Her first goal came in the 19th minute, going through the defense and catching the goalie out of position.

The Spartans put the game out of reach early in the second half with goals about a minute apart. Senior forward Carly Goehring put a shot over the reach of the Dover-Eyota goaltender for a 4-0 lead. McKown then earned her hat trick on a sequence of passes that push the lead to 5-0.

“Any team’s going to play well in the state tournament,” Orono coach Erin Murray said. “When you have 10 starters that are seniors, it just kind of goes without saying. They want to keep playing.”

The Spartans pushed their winning streak to 15 games. On their current streak, they’ve recorded 13 shutouts, including all three section games. They haven’t surrendered a goal since Oct. 3.

“We know if we play our game, no one can stop us,” Bash said.
