Senior forward Elizabeth Muench scored a goal and added an assist to lead No. 4 seed Edina to a 3-0 win over No. 5 seed Prior Lake in the Class 2A, Section 2 quarterfinals on Thursday night at Kuhlman Stadium in Edina.

Senior midfielder Emily Rethlake scored the first goal for the Hornets, banging in a loose ball in front of the Lakers’ net in the 18th minute.

Muench’s goal came on a beautiful long shot from nearly 20 yards out as she floated the ball over Prior Lake sophomore goalkeeper Leah Pavlish to give Edina (11-5-2) a 2-0 lead early in the second half.

Sophomore midfielder Maria Boman added the third goal for the Hornets, ranked No. 10 in the Class 2A coaches’ poll.

Edina coach Katie Aafeldt said that her team’s early energy was key in the win.

“I was impressed with the effort we come out with at the very beginning,” she said after the game.

The Hornets recorded a 2-0 victory over the Lakers (6-5-6) earlier this season, but Aafeldt said that the atmosphere is totally different during the postseason.

“The intensity is a little different come section time,” Aafeldt said. “So we knew it would be a high-intensity game.”
