About a half dozen times before Wednesday's game, Visitation players watched film of their regular-season-ending, double-overtime loss to Blake, coach Jay Miller said.

That appeared to help motivate the Blazers. Sophomore defender Kira Johansen made the game-winning penalty kick to give the fifth-seeded Blazers (15-2-2) a 5-3 shootout victory against fourth-seeded Blake. The teams were scoreless through overtime.

Sammie Sabin, Katherine Jones, Meridith Killian and Olivia Monpetit also made penalty kicks for the Blazers, who lost 2-0 to Blake in double overtime on Oct. 7.

“They beat the heck out of us three weeks ago,” Miller said. “We came home from that and said ‘Never again.’ We’re going to double down and refocus our efforts.”

They watched film of the game as recently as Wednesday afternoon, Miller said. They also practiced penalty kicks before section games, after losing in a shootout in last year’s section semifinals.

Senior goalie Sam Burke stopped several key shots in the second half, including one that appeared headed for the upper portion of the net. She said the earlier loss to Blake was motivating.

“We knew what we had to do coming into that overtime,” she said.

Blake (13-5-2), making its first state appearance since 2013 almost scored twice in the second half but midfielder Amelia Reyes hit the crossbar.

First report

Junior Kira Johansen made the game-winning penalty kick for Visitation in a 5-3 shootout.

Both teams had chances to score in regulation. Visitation’s Sammie Sabin had an open run on the net late in the first half, but Blake defender Kyra Willoughby kicked the ball away. The Blazers appeared to score on a free kick in the second half, but the refs waved it off, because it did not touch another player before going in the goal.

Blake’s Amelia Reyes had two shots go off the crossbar in the second half, while the Bears’ Sara McClanahan had a shot tipped over the crossbar by Visitation goalie Samantha Burke.

Blake (13-5-2), the fourth seed, was making its 10th state tournament appearance and first since 2013. The Bears defeated Visitation 2-0 in overtime earlier this month in their final regular-season game.

Fifth-seeded Visitation (15-2-2) was making its second state-tournament appearance and first since 2001.

Check back late for more on the game.
