Final state rankings show little movement

Class 2A has two new top 10 teams while Class 1A's top four remains unchanged.

Class 2A

With the end of the regular season comes the final Minnesota High School Soccer Coaches Association rankings of the season. In Class 2A, there were two new teams that joined the top 10.

Roseville jumped up six spots, moving from No. 13 to No. 7. The Raiders (11-3-2) have been on a tear in the past few weeks. On Sept. 16, they lost 2-0 to Minnetonka. Since then, they have won seven of eight games to close out the regular season. They played so well down the stretch, against mostly conference teams, that they were able to finish with 19 points in the East Suburban Conference, tied with No. 2 Stillwater with the most points in the conference. Unfortunately for Roseville, Stillwater (11-1-1) won the conference because of its better goal differential.

The other new team is No. 9 Rochester Mayo. The Spartans (13-1-2) have been consistently good all season, having lost only one game all season, a 2-0 defeat to East Ridge on Aug. 26. They ended up finishing second in the Big 9 Conference, two points behind Austin. Their season was good enough for them to earn the No. 1 seed in the Class 2A, Section 1 tournament.

Holding the top spot for the third consecutive week, Wayzata (14-0-2) finished the regular season rattling off seven straight wins. The Trojans will pace the Section 6 playoffs.

Class 1A

There were no new teams in the final rankings for Class 1A. The top four teams are all in the same spot, including No. 1 Blake, which has held onto the top spot for a few weeks now.

This is impressive considering the amount of movement that has happened with the No. 1 spot in Class 1A. Orono, ranked sixth, had it at the beginning, and held on for the first few weeks, but a loss to Monticello on Sept. 16 knocked the Spartans (11-3-2) down. No. 2 Totino-Grace took over and held onto the top spot for a week but the Eagles lost to Blake 4-0 on Sept. 22.

Blake has held on ever since. The Bears have yet to lose a game this year, finishing the season with a record of 13-0-2. They now sit atop the Section 5 tournament, where they could possibly face Totino-Grace (13-1-1) in the section finals.
