Orono captured the top spot in the Minnesota High School Soccer Coaches Association’s Class 1A rankings released Monday.
The Spartans (8-0-2, 4-0-1) are unbeaten this season and knocked off No. 8-1A Benilde-St. Margaret’s 2-1 on Sept. 9. Orono also has a 1-1 tie with No. 6-1A Mankato West and a 0-0 draw with No. 10-1A Waconia from earlier this season on the books.
Orono’s rise comes after previously No. 1-ranked Blake (7-2-1, 2-1) dropped a 3-2 game to Independent Metro Athletic Conference rival St. Paul Academy and a 1-0 loss to No. 2-2A Minneapolis Southwest last week. The Bears slide to No. 2.
Hill-Murray (5-0-3, 2-0) locked down the No. 3 spot after defeating North St. Paul 5-0 and Park of Cottage Grove 2-0 a week ago.
St. Paul Academy (7-1, 4-0), which edged No. 9-1A Holy Angels 2-1 on Sept. 16, climbed to from No. 10 to No. 4 in the poll and will meet Blake at Orono High School on Oct. 5.
Mahtomedi (5-2-1, 2-0) maintained its hold on the No. 5 ranking after an impressive run against Class 2A and Suburban East Conference rivals. The Zephyrs had a 2-0 win over Cretin-Derham Hall on Sept. 16 and defeated No. 10-2A Stillwater 2-1 in overtime on Sept. 5.
There were no big surprises in the Class 2A rankings after Wayzata (8-0-1, 3-0-1) remained unbeaten and atop the poll with victories over Eden Prairie, Minnetonka and Kasson-Mantorville last week. The Trojans have a showdown with No. 4-2A Edina on Saturday to settle the top spot in the Lake Conference standings.
Minneapolis Washburn (7-1, 2-0) reclaimed the No. 2 ranking after an impressive 2-0 win over previously No. 2-ranked Maple Grove Saturday in Minneapolis.
The Crimson (8-1, 7-0) suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of the Millers and dropped a spot to No. 3. Maple Grove meets a surging Anoka squad on Saturday in an important Northwest Suburban Conference matchup.
The Hornets (6-1-2, 2-0-1) keep shutting out opponents and moving up the rankings, landing at No. 4 this week. They recorded a 0-0 draw against No. 2-2A Minneapolis Washburn on Sept. 18, the eight time this season Edina has kept a team from scoring.
Eagan (6-1, 3-0) also climbed one spot to No. 5 after rattling off four straight wins. The Wildcats have games against Minneapolis Washburn and No. 7-2A Burnsville looming.
