Our Top Game of the Week features two large-class Goliaths.
Wayzata, the No. 2-ranked team in the Class 2A coaches' poll from Sept. 11, hosts No. 3-2A Edina on Saturday. That alone makes this one of the most anticipated boys’ soccer games of the season, but it’s even more important because the teams are fighting for the Lake Conference title.
The Trojans (8-0-2, 2-0-2) sit atop the conference with eight points in four games. The Hornets (7-0-2, 2-0-1) are one point behind but have only played three conference games. The teams played to a 1-1 draw on Sept. 5 at Edina.
Wayzata defeated Edina 2-0 in the Class 2A state semifinals last season, with returning players Drew Galinson and Patrick Weah each tallying an assist. Wayzata lost to Stillwater in the finals, while Edina beat Andover 3-0 in the third-place game.
Neither Edina nor Wayzata should have the state tournament on its mind quite yet. The Hornets play No. 9-2A Eden Prairie on Tuesday before facing the Trojans; Wayzata travels to No. 4-2A Minneapolis Washburn on Monday before Saturday’s showdown.
