It took 89 minutes for the first and only goal in Saturday’s game between Breck and No. 5-1A Rochester Lourdes.

Rochester Lourdes dominated the first half of the game, stringing passes together, and winning the one-on-one battles. Breck could not keep up with the Eagle’s forwards and midfielders, and Breck junior goaltender Hudson Haecker was busy for the majority of the first half.

In the 14th minute the Eagles scored off of a header, but it was denied due to offsides. Rochester Lourdes continued to pressure Haecker, but the Mustang defense negated the following chances.

Breck’s offense struggled to control the ball in the midfield, and could not test Eagles freshman goalkeeper Jaxon Hopkins. The Eagles outshot the Mustangs 5-0 in the first half.

After being shutout in shots during the first half, the Mustangs quickly pulled even 5-5. Breck coach George Stuempfig knew he had to push the offense a little more coming out of the first half.

“We discussed different ways to get behind the defense, and tried to get the ball over the top of their defenders,” Stuempfig said. “I think it caused their defenders to give us more space in the middle.”

Junior Eric Smits was the spark the Breck offense needed. Smits was strong and often distributed the ball into open areas for the Mustang attackers. In the 72nd minute, Smits found some space and rifled a shot just glancing off the post. Four minutes later Smits delivered a cross finding a Mustang attacker, but the header glanced off the crossbar giving the Eagle’s defenders time to clear it.

“Eric is so good on the ball, and draws two or three defenders to him, giving our players more space,” Stuempfig said.

Regulation time ended with both teams tied 0-0 with two five-minute overtime periods to follow. Breck continued to control the ball much of the overtime generating two chances in the first overtime, while Rochester Lourdes played strong defense and had a near chance off of a cross.

With one minute left in the second overtime period, Breck senior defender Andrew Shideman passed the ball to senior Will Torgerson who had broken through the defense. Torgerson collected the pass and beat the goalie with a hard shot to give the Mustangs the lead and victory over Rochester Lourdes.

“I got through the defense and ball came out to me at the top of the box and I just turned on it,” Torgerson said. “We had a lot of guys up there, and we knew the ball would eventually find us.”

Coach Stuempfig said that Torgerson is a physical presence up top, and that defenders have to deal with his strength and size. With the win, Breck improves to 4-4-1 thanks to Torgerson’s fourth goal of the season.

“The win means a lot against a good team, and it shows our guys that they can compete with anyone.” Stuempfig said.
