Class 2A

Behind the strength of a 5-0-1 start, Wayzata stayed in the top spot of the Class 2A coaches' poll. The Trojans tied Edina 0-0 on Sept. 5, then responded with an 8-0 win over Hopkins and a 3-1 win over Cretin-Derham Hall. The Trojans surrendered their first goal of the season against the Raiders, and they've outscored opponents 30-1 this season. Marissa Kalkar leads the Trojans with six goals this season.

Maple Grove (6-0, 5-0) supplanted Minneapolis Washburn to rise to No. 2 in the rankings. The Crimson have yet to surrender a goal and have outscored opponents 24-0.

The Millers (6-0, 2-0) slipped to No. 3 in Class 2A but have a chance to regain their previously held No. 2 ranking when they meet Maple Grove on Sept. 16.

Andover (5-1-1, 4-0-1) stayed at No. 4 — even after defeating defending Class 2A state champion Centennial 3-1 on Sept. 5. The Huskies went on to defeat Coon Rapids 8-3 in their next game.

Edina made the biggest climb in this week’s poll. The Hornets (5-1-1, 1-0-1) put together an impressive week to move from not even receiving votes to the No. 5 spot in Class 2A. The Hornets tied No. 1 Wayzata, beat No. 8-2A Minnetonka 1-0 and defeated previously No. 10-2A White Bear Lake.

Class 1A

Blake (6-0-1, 2-0) remained No. 1 in Class 1A after a week where it outscored opponents 18-0, including a 5-0 win over Breck. The Bears will try to defend that No. 1 ranking when it plays No. 10-1A St. Paul Academy on Wednesday.

Orono (5-0-2, 2-0-1) ascended to the No. 2 spot in Class 1A after it tied defending Class 1A, Section 6 champion Waconia and beat two-time defending Class 1A champion Benilde-St. Margaret’s 2-1.

No. 3-1A Hill-Murray (3-0-3, 1-0) hasn’t shied away from playing the top teams in the state this season. A tough schedule early on has pitted the Pioneers against No. 8-2A Centennial, No. 4-1A Benilde-St. Margaret's and a Class 2A Woodbury team. All three games ended in ties.

The Red Knights come in at No. 4-1A in this week’s poll after a 2-1 loss to Orono on Sept. 9. Benilde-St. Margaret’s will get a chance to gain some momentum in the coming weeks. The Red Knights (2-2-1, 1-0) won’t face a ranked opponent until Sept. 21, when they meet No. 7-1A Visitation.

Mahtomedi (4-2-1, 1-0) maintained the No. 5 spot in the poll, as they bounced back from a pair of 1-0 losses to White Bear Lake and East Ridge by beating Stillwater 2-1 in overtime. The Zephyrs also tied Woodbury 0-0. Mahtomedi will get another challenge on Sept. 21 when it faces No. 7-2A Mounds View.
