Class 1A

The Class 1A coaches' poll was released Sept. 2, and there was plenty of movement now that teams have started to play games.

Orono remains on top this week as it has yet to lose this season. The Spartans dropped points in a 1-1 draw with DeLaSalle on Aug. 29, but that was not enough to drop them from the No. 1 spot.

Tuesday night Orono dismantled Hutchinson 12-0, so there’s no sign of the Spartans falling down the rankings anytime soon. Christian Babo had four assists in the big win, and he now has nine on the season, the most in the state.

Climbing the rankings this week was Blake, which went from No. 12 to No. 2. The Bears surprisingly started the season outside of the top 10 after reaching the state tournament a year ago, but they have worked their way to the second-highest ranking in the class. Unlike Orono, Blake has yet to drop any points this season, and that includes a 4-1 win over DeLaSalle.

Blake took the No. 2 spot from Breck, which fell to No. 6. The rivals played to a 1-1 draw on Sept. 5, and we'll have to see how the result will impact next week’s rankings.

Rounding out the top 10 are three 3-0-0 teams that were not ranked in the preseason poll: No. 8 St. Paul Highland Park, No. 9 Bemidji and No. 10 Mahtomedi.

Class 2A

The Class 2A rankings were updated Sept. 2, and the defending state champions remain the No. 1 team in the state.

Stillwater ran through its competition last season, finishing undefeated. The Ponies haven’t lost a step this year, as they have won each of their first three games by a combined score of 16-3.

Wayzata, the team that lost to Stillwater in last year’s title game, stays at No. 2. The Trojans have yet to lose this season, and the only points they’ve dropped came against No. 3 Edina on Tuesday in a 1-1 draw. The Hornets have yet to lose a game this season either.

The biggest fall this week was by Prior Lake, which dropped from No. 6 to No. 15. The Lakers have lost their last two games -- on the road at No. 3 Edina (1-0) and at No. 2 Wayzata (3-0).
