This week’s top game is a marquee showdown between two of Class 1A’s top teams. On Saturday afternoon, St. Thomas Academy, ranked third in the Class 1A coaches' poll, will travel to the Star Dome to take on No. 4 Holy Angels.

The top-end teams carry plenty of shared history from the past two years. The Stars and Cadets met in the past two Class 1A, Section 3 title games, and in last season's section championship, a first-half goal from Vernon Lovegreen was enough to get the Cadets past the Stars, effectively ending Holy Angels’ season and pushing St. Thomas Academy into the state tournament. The Cadets made their way to U.S. Bank Stadium, where they defeated Northfield 1-0 to win their first state title in program history.

But that’s all in the rear-view mirror now. The Cadets (2-1) lost seven seniors from last year’s team, but they've retained some big contributors from the 2016 state championship squad. Lovegreen, who scored six goals and assisted on two others last year, is back to lead the defense. Last year’s leading scorer, Aman Bird, also returns, coming off a season with 13 goals and seven assists.

The Stars (3-0-1) lost five players from last year’s team, but return Thomas Kelley, who was second on the team in goals last year (5), and tied for first in assists (5). They also have last year's starting goalkeeper, Shea O’Rourke back. O’Rourke made 79 saves last year with a 0.91 goals against average.

Those returning starters now have a chance for revenge Saturday at home in our featured Top Game of the Week.
