Prior Lake met the Hornets in the Class 2A, Section 2 semifinal game, where the game ended in a loss for the Lakers, putting an end to their season.

Tonight, in the second game of their 2017 regular season, the Lakers would again match-up with Edina for a shot at redemption.

Matt Lindberg, the leading scorer on the Hornets’ roster last season, would be back to face the Lakers in his final season with Edina.

The senior did his part by scoring the only goal in Tuesday night’s game, helping propel Edina (2-0-1) to a 1-0 home victory over Prior Lake (1-1).

“We got a good goal by Matt,” Edina coach Dave Jenson said. “He worked really hard for that and had a really hard game, and that kind of stuff helps.”

Because of all the points that left them after last season, you might think that Lindberg would have to elevate his game even more this season. Lindberg thinks differently.

“The kids that we picked up this year and the kids that rode the bench last year but are starters now are picking it up themselves,” he said. “I don’t really need to carry much more weight. It’s more of a team thing.”

What Jenson was alluding to was the Lakers’ talented team and, specifically, attacker Daniel Wee.

“I knew that they had clever guys upfront. So, I thought we were a little bit mismatched early on with [Daniel Wee],” Jenson said. “He is one of the best players that they have, so we made a couple of changes as the game went on to kind of counter his speed and techniques. I thought our guys adjusted well.”

Lindberg also spoke highly of Wee and his teammates.

“We knew they had a couple dangerous outside forwards, so we knew we just had to keep up with their speed up top,” he said. “But other than that it was just play our game and play the way we always play.”

Last year’s section semifinal rematch also drew in a bigger Edina student section than usual, according to Lindberg.

“It was special,” He said. “It was really fun to have that kind of support.”

After the game, Jenson told his team to enjoy the win, as coaches seem to always do after an important victory. But there was one thing that he wanted his team to remember: “Don’t forget this opponent.”

First Report

Matt Lindberg tallied the only goal of the game in the Hornets' 1-0 victory over Prior Lake on Tuesday night at Kuhlman Stadium in Edina.

The matchup was a rematch of last year’s Class 2A, Section 2 semifinal game, where the Hornets won 2-1 and ended the Lakers’ season.

Goalkeeper Ethan Derks had a number of impressive saves in both halves to keep the Lakers, ranked No. 6 in the Class 2A coaches' preseason poll, in it throughout Tuesday's game, but one goal was all the No. 3-2A Hornets needed.

Lindberg’s goal came with just a few minutes left in the first half.

Going into halftime, Prior Lake (1-1) was leading Edina (2-0-1) in shots on goal. After halftime, the Hornets took control of the ball and the game, allowing only one shot for goalie Ethan Ruwe to worry about.
