Our Top Game of the Week comes from upstate Minnesota, where Lake Superior Conference play heats up with a Duluth derby. Duluth Denfeld will travel less than six miles to Duluth Marshall on Thursday to decide, at least for the time being, which school has the best soccer team in the city.
If you go by last year’s results, the Hunters have the advantage. These teams met twice a year ago, resulting in a 3-0 Duluth Denfeld victory in August, and again on Oct. 15 in the Class 1A, Section 7 quarterfinals, where Denfeld won 3-1 on its way to a section championship and state tournament berth.
The Hunters (1-1) lost 1-0 to Mahtomedi to open the season and rebounded with a 2-1 win over North Branch last week. They face Cambridge-Isanti on Tuesday before facing the Hilltoppers.
Marshall (0-2) has yet to pick up any victories this season, losing 3-2 against Benilde-St. Margaret's last Friday and 2-0 to Rochester Lourdes the following day. The Hilltoppers start league play Tuesday against Hermantown, the defending Lake Superior champion, before clashing with the Hunters, hoping to reverse last year's fortunes against a familiar foe.
