Described by Hastings High School athletic director Trent Hanson as a legend and pioneer of girls’ sports in Hastings, longtime girls’ volleyball contributor Vicki Davis is retiring after 45 years of athletic service.

Davis is credited for starting several Hastings athletic programs for girls, including basketball, track and field, volleyball and tennis. Since 1972, she has served the volleyball program, first as a coach then referee and now as official scorer, the role from which she’ll retire at the end of the fall season.

Davis was honored Oct. 11 during the Raiders’ annual “Dig Pink” cancer awareness and fundraiser game.

“I’ll miss the kids and watching them grow into better volleyball players and young women,” Davis said.

Cougars volleyball building momentum

For the first time, the Lakeville South girls’ volleyball team won the Lakeville North Bachman Invitational. The tournament’s field included No. 4 Prior Lake, No. 9 Lakeville South and No. 14 East Ridge, all of which Lakeville South defeated.

After advancing out of their pool, the Cougars defeated Lakeville North in two sets in the semifinals and Prior Lake in two sets in the final. Lakeville South’s victory over Prior Lake avenged a loss to the Lakers at the Eagle Invite in September.

“We feel like we are on the rise,” Cougars coach Stephen Willingham said. “We have had a good season, but we feel like we are playing really good volleyball right now.”
