Edina coach Dave Jenson refuses to watch his Hornets take penalty kicks, a superstition he says dates back nearly two decades

“Back in 1999, 2000, 2001 I never watched them,” Jenson said, citing Edina's run of three straight state championships.

It’s a shame that Jenson doesn’t watch those shots, because the Hornets converted six total on Thursday night to edge Minnetonka 3-2 in the Class 2A, Section 2 finals at Chanhassen High School.

Senior midfielders Roody Joinvil and Peter Rundquist converted their respective penalty shots 20 minutes apart in the first half to give Edina (15-3-1) a 2-0 lead, a deficit that Minnetonka coach Mike Rogers said hampered his team.

“Edina’s two early (penalty kicks) put us in a hole,” Rogers admitted.

“But we fought hard and fought back and I thought we had the better part of the action,” Rogers added.

Minnetonka senior midfielder Avery Weaver scored in the 39th minute to pull the Skippers (13-5-1) within one, and fellow senior midfielder Josh Greiner notched the tying goal with exactly two minutes remaining in regulation.

“The guys were just hungry,” Rogers said of his team’s second half edge.

“We’ve been an aggressive team all year long, (and) we gave them a good battle.”

Junior defender Max Pardo scored the sixth and final penalty for the Hornets and junior goalkeeper Ethan Ruwe deflected Finn Histon’s spot kick for the winning save.

“I don’t have a method,” Ruwe said with a grin.

“(Histon) stepped up and looked like someone who would go to my right and I took a chance and it ended up working out for me.”

With the win, the Hornets advance to their first state tournament since 2013.
